Why XG Groove for Everyday Cotton Spinning

The G groove aims at the everyday middle of a mill’s count schedule, where cotton in the Ne 16–40 band needs a stable fibre ring more than it needs the extremes of the range. Rotors in this group share that groove and differ by cup diameter, so the groove can stay constant while the count moves.

XG Groove — Applicable Yarn Count Range

Medium counts are the design point. If the schedule drifts below Ne 16, plan for the U or GL groove rather than stretching this one. Mills usually run a sample first to verify the groove on the machine before a bulk order.

XG Groove — Built for the Middle of the Count Range

The standard G groove is sized for the fibre mass of medium counts, so fibre collection, twist propagation and yarn formation all sit in the comfortable part of the curve. End-break behaviour stays flat across a full doff. It is the specification to fall back on when a mill wants one groove for the bulk of its cotton schedule.

↓

Fewer End Breaks

Twist propagation through a standard-profile groove avoids the tension spikes that appear when a rotor is pushed outside its count band.

↻

Clean-Running Profile

The groove cross-section resists micro-dust build-up, reducing the periodic faults that otherwise show up after long continuous runs.

⊙

Diameter Choice, Same Groove

Group members share the groove and differ in cup diameter, so counts can shift by changing rotor size without changing spinning-box setup.

Cost-Effective Standard

The G rotor is the workhorse of the range — a straightforward coated cup for mills where cost per kilogram of yarn and steady running both matter.

Surface Engineering

What BD Means: Base and Working Surface

The trailing letters of the model code are two independent codes, not one word: B is the substrate, D is the working surface. This code is a two-layer build: B puts a boronized (boron-steel) substrate under the film, D is the diamond top layer. The base is what stops fibre impact from deforming the rotor and cracking the coating. Standard lead time on coated rotors is 7–15 days, with urgent orders on request.

B — Boronized base
In this code · Substrate layer
Substrate hardening
Boronized / boron steel Supports the D layer Fibre impact

B = boronized (boron-steel) substrate. A diamond film is only microns thick, so the steel underneath decides whether it survives: a soft substrate deforms under fibre and grit impact and the film cracks and spalls off. The boronized base is the hardening step that keeps the diamond layer intact.

D — Diamond coating
In this code · Working surface
HV 1000-1200
CVD diamond film Friction 0.05–0.1 Anti-stick

D = diamond top layer, grown on the prepared substrate as a micron-scale film. It takes the fibre and grit contact directly, which is where the wear resistance, the friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1 and the anti-stick behaviour come from that hold the groove profile over long runs. Diamond coating technology of US origin, applied on JSM’s own treatment line.

Which Rieter Machines Use 31-XG-BD-AE1?

The R60-AE1 bearing locks this rotor to the Rieter R60 platform. Rotors from a different bearing group will not interchange, however similar the cup looks.

✓ Rieter R60 — R60-AE1 bearing
Fully automatic platform. 31-XG-BD-AE1 is one of 7 rotor models in the R60-AE1 group (28–40 mm diameter range).
✗ R60-EC1 — the second R60 rotor group
Same R60 machine, different bearing: see 31-XG-BD-EC1, 31-XGM-BD-EC1 and 33-XT-BD-EC1.
✗ R40-AE / R40-EC — older R40 groups
R40 rotor groups use R40-AE / R40-EC bearings and do not interchange with the R60 bearing groups.
✗ Rieter R923 / R35 / R36 / R37
Semi-automatic platforms running T013 or 73-1-69 bearings with C-series and S-series rotor codes.

FAQ

31-XG-BD-AE1 — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most often about this rotor. If yours is not listed, send it with your machine model and current rotor code — we reply within 24 hours.

Is 31-XG-BD-AE1 compatible with my Rieter R60 machine?
31-XG-BD-AE1 uses the R60-AE1 bearing, which is the rotor standard for the Rieter R60 platform. It is one of 7 rotor models in the R60-AE1 group (28–40 mm diameter range). If your spinning box runs a different bearing series the rotor will not interchange — send us your machine model and current rotor code and we confirm within 24 hours.
What does the model code 31-XG-BD-AE1 mean?
31 is the rotor cup diameter in millimetres — Ø31 mm. XG is the groove, a standard profile for medium to fine counts. In the code, B is the boronized (boron-steel) substrate and D the diamond top layer. The code ends with the bearing identifier: the R60-AE1 bearing for the Rieter R60 platform.
What yarn counts does the XG groove suit?
The XG profile covers Ne 16–40, medium to fine counts. Above the band the groove is tighter than the fibre ribbon needs; below it the wider profiles run better.
What do the letters BD mean in the model code 31-XG-BD-AE1?
BD is two codes, not one word. B is the boronized (boron-steel) substrate and D is the diamond top layer, so a -BD- rotor is a hardened base with a diamond working face. The point of the pairing is mechanical: a diamond film is only microns thick, and if the steel underneath is soft, fibre and grit impact dents it and the film cracks off. The boronized base is what keeps the diamond layer intact. A -D- code carries the diamond layer on the standard substrate.
How much does an OEM-equivalent rotor save versus the original?
Because rotors are replaced on a wear schedule, the 40–60% difference against the OEM part compounds over a year of change-outs. Send your annual quantity and we quote on that basis.
Can I order the rotor spindle or rotor cup separately?
If the spindle is sound and only the cup is worn — or the other way round — we quote the individual part. Send the rotor code and a note on which part failed and we advise from there.
