Why S Groove for Blends and Speciality Fibres

The S groove is the speciality profile for blends and non-cotton fibres — a groove shaped for fibre mixes that behave differently from straight cotton in the Ne 16–40 band. Because the count band is not published, the selection is checked against your fibre and target count before quoting.

S Groove — Applicable Yarn Count Range

Aimed at mixed fibre. For 100% cotton at the same counts the G or T groove is the simpler choice. Mills usually run a sample first to verify the groove on the machine before a bulk order.

S Groove — Shaped for Blends and Speciality Fibres

In a blend, fibres of different length and friction travel the groove together. The S profile is shaped so the mixed ribbon stays under control through deposition and twist insertion, which keeps yarn strength and appearance consistent when the blend ratio or the fibre supplier changes. Mills running several fibre types often keep an S-profile rotor alongside their standard cotton rotors.

Tolerant of Lot Variation

Designed to absorb the variation that comes with buying speciality fibre lot by lot.

Right Tool for Speciality Work

Rather than forcing a cotton groove, the S profile is matched to the fibre mix.

Built for Mixed Fibres

Groove geometry adapted to blends, where fibre length and friction differ inside the same ribbon.

Consistent Blend Yarn

Keeps yarn strength and appearance steady when the blend ratio or the fibre supplier changes.

Surface Engineering

What D Means: Base and Working Surface

The trailing letters of the model code are two independent codes, not one word: B is the substrate, D is the working surface. Diamond top layer (HV 1000-1200) with a friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1, which reduces fibre damage at the groove face. Standard lead time on coated rotors is 7–15 days, with urgent orders on request.

B — Boronized base
Not in this code · The -BD- models add it
Substrate hardening
Boronized / boron steel Supports the D layer Fibre impact

B = boronized (boron-steel) substrate. A diamond film is only microns thick, so the steel underneath decides whether it survives: a soft substrate deforms under fibre and grit impact and the film cracks and spalls off. The boronized base is the hardening step that keeps the diamond layer intact. This code does not carry the B step; it is the -BD- variant that pairs the diamond layer with the boronized base.

D — Diamond coating
In this code · Working surface
HV 1000-1200
CVD diamond film Friction 0.05–0.1 Anti-stick

D = diamond top layer, grown on the prepared substrate as a micron-scale film. It takes the fibre and grit contact directly, which is where the wear resistance, the friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1 and the anti-stick behaviour come from that hold the groove profile over long runs. Diamond coating technology of US origin, applied on JSM’s own treatment line.

Compatibility

Which Rieter Machines Use C340/S-D?

This rotor runs the T013 bearing, shared by the Rieter R923 and R35 semi-automatic machines. Models in the group differ by groove and rotor size, not by bearing fit.

✓ Rieter R923 and R35 — T013 bearing
Semi-automatic platform. C340/S-D is one of 9 rotor models in the Rieter R923 and R35 T013 group, running to 110,000 rpm with a recommended ceiling of ≤ 90,000 rpm.
✗ Rieter R36 / R37 — T013 bearing, S-series rotors
The R36 and R37 machines use the same T013 bearing family but S-series rotor codes (S341/U-D, S533/U-D and others) — not interchangeable with C-series.
✗ Rieter R923 / R35 — 73-1-69 bearing group
The same machines also run a 73-1-69 bearing group (C248/U-D, C250/U-D and others): different bearing, so the rotors do not interchange.
✗ Rieter R1 / R20 / R40 / R60
Fully automatic platforms using R20 Twin Disc, R40-AE / R40-EC or R60-AE1 / R60-EC1 bearings — a different rotor group entirely.

FAQ

C340/S-D — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most often about this rotor. If yours is not listed, send it with your machine model and current rotor code — we reply within 24 hours.

Is C340/S-D compatible with my Rieter R923 and R35 machine?
C340/S-D uses the T013 bearing and belongs to the Rieter R923 and R35 rotor group of 9 models, running to 110,000 rpm with a recommended ceiling of ≤ 90,000 rpm. The R36 and R37 machines take the S-series rotor codes instead, so a C-series rotor will not fit them. Send us your machine model and current rotor code and we confirm within 24 hours.
What does the model code C340/S-D mean?
Codes in this range read as series letter, rotor number, groove and coating suffix. C340 identifies the rotor in the R923 and R35 series, S is the groove profile (Ne 16–40), and the trailing D is the diamond top layer (the -BD- variants add a boronized base under it). The series letter also fixes the machine side: C-series rotors belong to the R923 / R35 group, S-series rotors to R36 / R37.
What yarn counts does the S groove suit?
The S profile covers Ne 16–40, blends and speciality fibres. Outside that band, ask us — a different groove family is usually the cheaper answer than running this one off its design point.
What do the letters BD mean in the model code C340/S-D?
Read the two letters separately. B describes the base: a boronized or boron-steel substrate — a hardening step, not a coating. D describes the working surface: a diamond film (HV 1000-1200) with a friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1, grown on the prepared substrate. B protects the film, D takes the wear. Which one your code carries tells you whether the substrate hardening is present (BD) or whether the rotor runs the diamond layer alone (D).
How much does an OEM-equivalent rotor save versus the original?
At equivalent dimensional accuracy our price sits 40–60% below the OEM part, and the assembly is dynamically balanced before it leaves the balancing line. Tell us the quantity and your target date and we quote price and freight within 24 hours.
Can I order the rotor spindle or rotor cup separately?
A rotor complete is the cup, the spindle (shaft) and the bearing. If only one part is worn we supply it separately rather than making you replace the whole assembly; send a photo of the worn part and we confirm the replacement.
