Groove Engineering

Why D III Groove for Application-Specific Spinning

The D III groove is matched per application rather than to a published band. The R20 Twin Disc bearing settles the machine side; the count window is confirmed for your order. Rotors in this group share that groove and differ by cup diameter, so the groove can stay constant while the count moves.

D III Groove — Yarn Count Range

The count band is confirmed per order. Include your target Ne, fibre type and spinning position with the enquiry. Groove and cup size are confirmed together when the order is placed.

D III Groove — Machine Fit Fixed, Count Confirmed

The bearing settles machine fit; the groove is confirmed against the job. For the D III code that means quoting on your application rather than on an assumed Ne range, which is the only way to avoid sending the wrong rotor to the spinning position. Send the fibre, the target count and the spinning position and the selection is confirmed before quoting.

⊙

Cup Size From the Code

The leading number gives the cup diameter in millimetres, so the rotor size is unambiguous.

Quotation Follows the Selection

Price and lead time are quoted on the confirmed selection, not on an assumption.

Count Matched to Your Application

The rotor is checked against your fibre, target count and spinning position rather than an assumed band.

Engineer-Confirmed Selection

Groove, cup size and coating are confirmed together before the order is released.

Surface Engineering

What D Means: Base and Working Surface

The trailing letters of the model code are two independent codes, not one word: B is the substrate, D is the working surface. The D in the code is the diamond top layer — the face that takes the fibre and grit contact. On the -BD- models that same layer sits on a boronized base. Every assembly is 100% dynamically balanced before it leaves the balancing line.

B — Boronized base
Not in this code · The -BD- models add it
Substrate hardening
Boronized / boron steel Supports the D layer Fibre impact

B = boronized (boron-steel) substrate. A diamond film is only microns thick, so the steel underneath decides whether it survives: a soft substrate deforms under fibre and grit impact and the film cracks and spalls off. The boronized base is the hardening step that keeps the diamond layer intact. This code does not carry the B step; it is the -BD- variant that pairs the diamond layer with the boronized base.

D — Diamond coating
In this code · Working surface
HV 1000-1200
CVD diamond film Friction 0.05–0.1 Anti-stick

D = diamond top layer, grown on the prepared substrate as a micron-scale film. It takes the fibre and grit contact directly, which is where the wear resistance, the friction coefficient of 0.05–0.1 and the anti-stick behaviour come from that hold the groove profile over long runs. Diamond coating technology of US origin, applied on JSM’s own treatment line.

Compatibility

Which Rieter Machines Use 40-D III-D?

For this group the rotor is shared across machine generations: the R20 Twin Disc bearing serves the Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 series, so one rotor part number covers four platforms.

✓ Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 — R20 Twin Disc bearing
Bearing shared by the Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 series platform. 40-D III-D is one of 6 rotor models in the R20 Twin Disc group (32–40 mm diameter range).
✗ R40-AE / R40-EC rotor groups
The R40 platform also runs the R40-AE and R40-EC bearing groups (31-XT-BD-AE, 46-XTC-BD-EC and others) — different bearings, not interchangeable with this group.
✗ R60-AE1 / R60-EC1 rotor groups
The current R60 generation uses R60-AE1 and R60-EC1 bearings with its own rotor sizes (28–40 mm) and does not interchange with these rotors.
✗ Rieter R923 / R35 / R36 / R37
Semi-automatic platforms running T013 or 73-1-69 bearings with C-series and S-series rotor codes.

FAQ

40-D III-D — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask most often about this rotor. If yours is not listed, send it with your machine model and current rotor code — we reply within 24 hours.

Is 40-D III-D compatible with my Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 machine?
40-D III-D uses the R20 Twin Disc bearing, the rotor standard shared by the Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 series, so the same rotor fits all four machine generations. It is one of 6 rotor models in that bearing group. Rotors from a different bearing group will not interchange — send us your machine model and current rotor code and we confirm within 24 hours.
What does the model code 40-D III-D mean?
40 is the rotor cup diameter in millimetres — Ø40 mm. D III is the groove, a application-specific profile, matched to the application. D denotes the diamond top layer on the prepared substrate. The code ends with the bearing identifier: the R20 Twin Disc bearing for the Rieter R1, R20, R40 and R60 platform.
What yarn counts does the D III groove suit?
There is no fixed count window published for the D III groove in our catalogue data. The usable band is confirmed against your fibre and target count before the order is released, so the rotor is matched to the application rather than to an assumed range.
What do the letters BD mean in the model code 40-D III-D?
BD is two codes, not one word. B is the boronized (boron-steel) substrate and D is the diamond top layer, so a -BD- rotor is a hardened base with a diamond working face. The point of the pairing is mechanical: a diamond film is only microns thick, and if the steel underneath is soft, fibre and grit impact dents it and the film cracks off. The boronized base is what keeps the diamond layer intact. A -D- code carries the diamond layer on the standard substrate.
How much does an OEM-equivalent rotor save versus the original?
Because rotors are replaced on a wear schedule, the 40–60% difference against the OEM part compounds over a year of change-outs. Send your annual quantity and we quote on that basis.
Can I order the rotor spindle or rotor cup separately?
If the spindle is sound and only the cup is worn — or the other way round — we quote the individual part. Send the rotor code and a note on which part failed and we advise from there.
